Day 5… Saturday, June 5th, 2021

On my first day of waking up in Kentucky, I decided to take a walk while everyone was still sleeping.  The beautiful neighborhood gave way to thoughts to gratefulness for this opportunity, and much needed meditation without screens.  After my protein shake and “Morning Musings” video was done, it was time for Steph, Cheryl and I to hit the open road.

First stop was the Bernheim Forest, aka the Forest of Giants.  A talented sculptor created three large giants among the gorgeous landscape of trees, all out of recycled wood.  As we walked to the first one, I tripped….and with my pride, fell flat on my face on to the ground. I luckily (we shall see), caught myself with my wrist, but I am expecting a pretty ugly bruise on my leg tonight.  Like life, I got back up, brushed myself off, and got the pic.  We found the other two Giants close too each other enough to walk to them, but still dealing with lots of hills that weren’t so fun in the heat. This park is BEAUTIFUL and I highly recommend this exhibit, it’s only sticking around for 3 months.

Next stop was Bardstown, home of the famous Kentucky bourbon. Now, I am not a drinker, but I really enjoyed driving past all of the Distilleries and seeing where they house the barrels, also the “Jim Bean” one has Mila Kunis’s brand stored there.

Lunch time was upon us and they took me to an old Tavern called “Old Talbott Tavern” that was built in 1779. Just the look of it on the outside got me excited, IT WAS SO COOL!  You could FEEL the energy off this building, and I don’t know if I was more happy to eat lunch or check out this building. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table, but it was worth it for the atmosphere alone. Cheryl suggested I order a famous Kentucky dish called “Hot Brown” which is smoked turkey, sugar-baked ham, on toast points smothered with Mornay cheese sauce and melted cheddar cheese with bacon and tomatoes.  It SOUNDED delicious, and I am committed to trying new things on this trip, so I ordered that with fried pickles for an appetizer.  People, that dish…..Oh. My. God.  Everything just melted together like a symphony in your mouth, it was so freaking good!!  I would definitely have it again.

Our waitress filled us in on the haunted Tavern we were dining in and the hotel that resides on the second floor. We were invited to check it out upstairs where Jesse James himself got a bit “punch drunk” one evening in his room and shot up a bunch of bullet holes in his room!  On the flip side, during a court case he had, Abraham Lincoln and his family also stayed a night here.  It’s surreal ALWAYS to me, to be dining, walking, sitting where all of these historical figures, characters, and the like once lived their lives and became legends.  Just so incredibly cool.

On the way out, we checked out the old cemetery in the back, lots of headstones with the 1700s on them.  Yall know me, I love me a good cemetery.  Then we headed on over to where Ari works on Main Street and sipped wine while we dished with her adorable co-worke, Zach.…Walter enjoyed the wine too.

All in all, a great day, topping it off wit a quick nap and this write up before I head to WAVERLY HILLS tonight for my ghost tour!!! I am so excited, this has been at the top of my list to experience.  Tomorrow I head to the races….yes, this girl is going to experience Churchill Downs for the first time, can’t wait!!

Today’s Moments of Kindness: Well, falling flat on my face was embrassring. And thankfully Steph and Cheryl made sure I was ok after I brushed off my ego. Also Zach treated us to free glasses of Wine, and it was delicious!!

A HUGE shout out once again to Stephanie and Cheryl who were excellent tour guides, dining companions, and always, wonderful friends to see the sights with.  Thank you ladies!
