When looking for things to tour and check out in Georgia, I came across the “Center for Puppetry Arts” located in downtown Atlanta. As a Muppet fan, Sesame Street fan, Dark Crystal fan and Labyrinth…well, this was the top of the Mountain for me today. And Walter? He was more excited than I was! Honestly it just worked out really well that my Mascot just happened to BE a Muppet. I have enjoyed many a thing up until this moment…but people…this was like meeting myself as a child…and we stood face to face among all of my childhood friends.
So with mask optional, I wore it while touring, but I did take it down for pics (we were alone in most of the rooms most of the time). The Jim Henson Collection was what I came for…I literally took a deep breath before I stepped into the Exhibit Hall. See, I didn’t look into what was there…I just knew that they had a Jim Henson Collection with a large Sesame Street collection. I’m that person that wants to be surprised…I don’t need to know every little last detail about a thing or place because I want that excitement in coming across it for myself. And let me tell you, this method has never failed for me. If I missed out on something, I would never know because it’s already past or gone. So que the moment when I walked in…
First, they go through Jim Henson’s History, showing off his office and his Emmys and then onto a Creation area on how they created the Muppets. But it’s the entrance to Sesame Street that took my breath away…seeing Ernie and Bert there to greet me….oh the tears welled up. There was Big Bird and Oscar…across the way was Elmo, Grover, and Cookie Monster. I wanted to sing, color, learn my alphabet all over again with my childhood heroes. It was just a moment I will never forget. And if you think I am being immature….hell yeah I am and you clearly don’t know me. I am HELLA proud of my childlike heart…it grounds me in this World of cynics and critics. Give me a Muppet any day.
Next was the Muppets….and when I saw “Mahna Mahna” I immediatedly called my entire family and we had a 4 way call as I prepared them for what I was looking at. See, this silly guy, we have watched at a family a billion times or more singing that goofy song, and it makes us laugh…EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. So when they all joined the call, I turned my camera around to show them and they all screamed!!!! Then I showed them Scooter, Pigs in Space, Kermit himself, and Muppets from “Treasure Island.” As I talked to them and we geeked out together…I saw him. That loveable, happy, sweet dog that I loved seeing every week on HBO…. Yes, SPROCKET from “Fraggle Rock.” There he was…and then as I am on the call I see the DOOZERS!!!! And it just got better!!! Uncle Traveling Matt (my hero on this trip), Gobo, and Red WERE ALSO THERE!! My heart was going to burst….I didn’t think I could take any more excitement.
And then…I turned to my left. I told the family to brace themselves…..for who did I see???? SIR DIDYMUS from LABYRINTH!!! I don’t know what I loved more…enjoying it with my family all at one time or seeing my friends right there in front of me. They also had DARK CRYSTAL which is the movie we named our daughter “Kyra” after- just different spelling. I watched all of the videos on how they made both movies, I took video myself, pics, and pictures with Walter and his friends. Check out his Instagram account to see all of his GREAT pictures from today! I CANNOT recommend this place more….kids, families, the nostalgia alone will blow your socks off! I had bought my ticket online and reserved a time- so check online before going.
We headed then to “Varsity” for lunch which I was told is an “Institution” in the area. Picture a VERY large diner, like a small city block, where they shout at you for your order (at least they used too)- no one yelled at me. LOL I ordered a “Glorified Burger” which is a burger with mayo, lettuce, and tomato. Fries and a Coke Zero, and I was good to go! They pack their food in these cute little boxes with their “Lingo” posted on the outside. It’s a popular place, celebrities stopping here all the time as well. So lunch again was somewhere new- yay!! Then we headed for desert at “Sublime Donuts” nearby- I chose the Butterfinger donut and it was delicious.
Next we headed to the Civil Rights Museum, located near the Coca-Cola Museum and Aquarium. Again, tickets pre-paid online with a reserved time, so again, check online before heading here. This was a powerful experience…a place with many lessons to be learned. I truly enjoyed it and it definitely makes you feel empowered to leave it wanting to fight the injustices in the World and to love each other….regardless of color and class. I highly encourage all to visit here.
Dinner was at “La Parilla” tonight as Christa and I enjoyed Mexican food over a well enjoyed day. The food was good, I had a taco salad and she had taco rancheros, but the wait was long, and the place was so loud that we were practically screaming at each other. I would NOT recommend this place for a quiet sit, but the food was good if you are just looking for a bite of Mexican.
I head out tomorrow for Louisville, Kentucky….about 7-8 hours with stops. Yes, another long drive, but I will be the best DJ I can be. I listen to music, podcasts, marco, and make phone calls…the time actually goes pretty quickly. Watch for check ins and videos on Facebook tomorrow and the rest of my time on the road…also THANK YOU to those who are buying my Merch and supporting me through Paypal…every little bit helps for me to love on others in return. Have a GREAT night! See you tomorrow.
Today’s Moments of Kindness: I called and included the family on seeing the Muppet Museum so we could all experience it together. It. was. Awesome!!
