“Lazy Dog” in Naperville, IL

I had just seen “Bill and Ted Face the Music” at Hollywood Palms Cinema, when I felt the craving for a home cooked meal, a comfort meal that would fill my “lupper” needs. I was in that wierd spot of the 3:00 hour, having not eaten lunch but too early for dinner, I made the decision to treat myself to something super nice and call it a day. Located at 436 S. State Route 59, it is steps away from the Movie Theater, so if you don’t want to dine at the Cinema, this is a perfect option for before or after the movie.

I knew nothing about the place going in, just that it had a warm and inviting feel to it on the outside. It reminded me of something that you’d find at Fort WIlderness or WIlderness Lodge in Disney World. Upon entering, you got that “rustic” feeling, with a roaring fireplace going steps behind the check-in desk. I fell in love with it instantly, it was like I was home for just a small piece of time. Because of the time of day, and a week day as I was there on September 9th, 2020, (AND COVID), the place was quiet. Just how I like it! Mask on as it is required pretty much everywhere these days, the protocol for Restaurants is to wear it until you get to your table, and then any time you have business around the place, to wear it, so basically only off at your table. And even then, IL had put in some other protocols recently of having to wear it when the server comes to your table, but nothing was asked of me or said, so that is debatable.

I LOVE eating at a new place because I never know what goodies I will find! So excited to try something new, yet I wanted that comfort food badly. It’s been cold and rainy since Labor day here and I just felt that “Fall” feel pretty hard, so I chose the potroast because it sounded delicious! The waitress was cheerful and kind, two things I crave when dealing with waitstaff, and she was prompt with meeting all my needs. I don’t even normally have an appetizer but she talked up the sweet potato tater tots so well that I thought I would try them, why not?

My wait to the deliciousness I was about to bestow on was quick and painless, so much so that I was suprised. I had barely begun to take interior pictures of the place when she was bringing over my appetizer and then my dinner right behind that! LOVE when the food comes out quickly, nothing is more frustrating when you are sincerely hungry and everyone around you is getting their meals and you sit there and wait.

Those sweet potato tots? OH MY GOODNESS!! Can I just have those as a side, instead of fries, for the rest of my life??? SOOO good! They give you this delicious creamy dipping sauce with them, and they give you A LOT of them for an appetizer. VERY HOT upon starting to try them, so be aware, nothing worse than burning the inside of your mouth on a tot.

Next was the pot roast….oh pot roast, where have you been all my life? The presentation was just as warm, and inviting, as the tots were. I LOVE when really well cooked meat falls apart on touch, nestled in a small, fluffy pile of mashed potatoes and cooked carotts. The first bite was heaven, as were the next. All I needed was to snuggle up in a soft blanket next to their fireplace and I was home. The nice surpise to this dish is that their is a bit of cooked spinach in the center of the mashed potatoes, and I am not a huge fan of spinach, but it was really good, and I figured if Popeye loves it, can’t be all that bad.

Now, I didn’t try any of their alcoholic beverages, but they had a really cool bar in the front of the Restaurant, along with outside seating as well. The menu looked to be filled with creative cocktails and mixed drinks, so if you aren’t looking for food, a drink with a friend would work just as well here.

I would definitely eat here again, the comfort I felt from the people, the building, and the food, was enough to bring me back again some day. AND the coolest thing they do is you can take one of their meals home, I did of the pot roast, as a TV DINNER PROMOTION, and for $10 you take the frozen version home to make there when you feel like it- same meal. Well, we will see when I actually make it, but I thought that was pretty genius! So if you are in the Naperville area in Illinois and you are looking for something really nice for a meal, a drink, and a sit for your soul, check them out- enjoy!
