During every trip to Disney World, I am frequently on the hunt for unique souvenirs. Being the fashionista that I am, this generally means I look for clothes, bags, and accessories.
Have you ever wandered the World Showcase in Epcot and noticed the Bead Outpost? Have you stopped to look? If not, I encourage you to do so. The Bead Outpost represents one of the humanitarian efforts that Disney participates in. On the surface, these accessories may simply look like colorful bead necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. But it goes deeper. Much deeper.
All of these pieces are handcrafted in Uganda, as part of the BeadforLife program. Ugandan women roll up pieces of paper and form the beads to create each piece of jewelry. It gives these women an opportunity to make a life for themselves with steady income while in the program, and the skills needed to launch their own businesses once they leave the program. I once came across their facebook page where a staff member had gathered photos of people wearing the jewelry to show one of the bead makers. According to this staff member, the woman cried tears of joy to see the photos. This truly warms my heart.
So how is this “Disney?” Well, the beads at the Bead Outpost aren’t rolled from just any piece of paper. They are rolled from old Disney maps! So not only are you getting a great accessory (at a great price, mind you…my bracelet was $10!), but you get to carry a piece of Disney with the knowledge that you are helping provide opportunities for women across the ocean.
I can’t wait to add more of these amazing piece of jewelry to my accessory collection!
