I thought it would be fun to blog about our family’s year in review. As everyone, we had our ups and downs, but we end the year on a high note. Hear how we made it through this past year and how we kept our dream alive.
Our 2010 year started off with Craig being unemployed. It is tough, to say the least, to know you are starting a year off without stability. For those of you that are there right now, we know how you feel and we encourage you to hold and keep moving forward- it WILL get better!!
Spring would bring the birth of what you are reading now “The Relocated Tourist” blog. Our dream was to move to FL in 2012, and blog about our adventures as we prepared for the big day. Craig came up with the great name, and I made the decision to start the blog 2 years before our move. I figured we would be able to make connections, friendships, etc.. through the means of this cool media tool, and it would ultimately help us in the transition of becoming “Floridians.” The blog would help keep our minds off looking for a job, and help us look to a positive future.
After looking for several months, our summer became the summer of choices. We walked one evening, like we always did after dinner, and we started to think that maybe there would be more work in FL for his job field. We had come to a fork in the road, and we of course, had two choices. We take a chance, head to Florida 2 years ahead of schedule, or wait it out here in WI, and hope that Craig finds work soon. We would decide to stay in WI one more full year, giving the girls one last year in their schools, a year left at my job, and give us time to save money for a proper move to FL. But, it would also shorten our wait time on the original move, and we decided that 2011 would be the year of our move-finally.
Again, I had known people personally who picked up and moved without thinking it really through, and that scared me to death. I was personally torn- if Craig could get a great job out there, we could get out of the unemployment game and start to live life again. It was a tough choice, but our lives would soon reveal we made the right one.
After much prayer and endless hours of discussing it, Craig was blessed with a wonderful job at the end of summer. What was so cool about his job, was that he could work from home. No more worrying about having to have 2 vehicles or different work schedules. In fact, his job was THRILLED about our move to FL because he would have access to more people in the South. “Could this truly be happening” we thought… “Is this for real?” Just like that, we had the job to support our dreams. Wow.
Since that moment, we have been moving forward with our relocation plans, the blog and living our WI life. We met Joan Cusack this summer in Chicago and made the news with it! Kyra got to meet her favorite band “Paramore” in person before their concert- another dream come true. I was fortunate to spend some time in FL and WDW this past November where I met some of the greatest friends I will probably ever have and experienced many firsts. We enjoyed the Midwest and tried out new things as family and on our own since we knew it would be our last one to really explore the area we had grown up in.
As we look ahead, we prepare, prepare, prepare. The days of chilling out are gone, as we are in full moving mode. Our garage sale is going to be I N S A N E. I can’t tell you how many boxes I have brought home from work and filled with no problem. We basically have a small trailer and the back of a mini-van for moving things we want to keep. It will be an adjustment for all of us to get rid of certain things we may have emotional ties to, but they are “things” that we can replace in FL. I am so excited for a new bed, and a new living room couch. Our furniture I believe was made in the Stone Age… meaning it is REALLY old and worn! We have one of those couches where you sit on it and it swallows you whole. Yeah, I think it’s time for a new one.
We are celebrating this Friday, our last official New Year’s Eve in Wisconsin with a family dinner out and board games when we get home. We will wake up Saturday and get to say “We are moving to FL this year” and we CANNOT WAIT!!!
A big thanks to everyone for supporting us this past year- we love you so much and appreciate your kindness and friendship. Stay tuned as we count down over the next months ahead… it’s getting good now!!!
Happy New Year, see you in 2011!!!
